The Pike County High School Junior Beta and Beta clubs are collecting supplies this week for the county’s two rescues, Precious Paws Sanctuary (PPS) and Troy Animal Rescue Project (TARP) and the Pike Animal Shelter.

Faith Maddox, Beta Club advisor, said the students are excited to be a part of doing something to assist those who are seeking to make life better for animals that have been abused, neglected and abandoned.

Donna Brockmann, president of the Humane Society of Pike County, said the Humane Society of Pike County issued a challenge to the local schools to collect supplies for PPS, TARP and the Pike Animal Shelter to assist with their growing needs.

“Pike County High was the only school to accept the challenge so they will be awarded a plaque to keep at the school and also the “Top Dog” trophy, which will rotate among the winners each year,” Brockmann said. “The idea behind the ‘moving’ trophy is for PCHS to throw down the gauntlet next year and challenge other area schools to participate”

Brockmann said the “challenge” was an event of Be Kind to Animals Week and an effort to involve students in the efforts to reduce the number of unwanted animals in Pike County.

“The PCHS Beta clubs are accepting supply donations through Friday. Dog and cat food, kitty litter and cleaning supplies are all needed and would be greatly appreciated,” Brockmann said. “The supplies may be dropped off at the PCHS office.”

“The Humane Society of Pike County has events throughout the year to promote kindness to animals and to raise funds to assist those who are caring for unwanted animals until they can find forever homes for them,” she said. “The best way to reduce the unwanted dog and cat populations is to have animals spayed/neutered.”

Each year, the Humane Society of Pike County sponsors a Pet Photo Contest with the proceeds benefiting the society’s spay/neuter program. The program pays the first $50 of each procedure until the fund is depleted.

“The spay/neuter program is underway and all five veterinary clinics in Pike County are participating,” Brockmann said. “Pet owners who are residents of Pike County and Troy University students may take their pets to any one of the clinics for the procedures. However, it is best to call in advance.”
The humane society’s Pet Photo Contest kicks off around June 1. Now is a great time to get those outdoor pet photos for the contest.

“Hopefully, everyone remembers the Blessing of the Animals event at 11 a.m. Saturday on the square in downtown Troy,” Brockmann said. “Bring your animal and have it blessed. See you Saturday.”
