It was a memorable day at Pike County High School on Wednesday morning as the Bulldogs had two student athletes sign scholarships.

Kylie Redmon became the just the second female scholarship signee in principal Willie Wright’s tenure at Pike County when she signed a dance scholarship with Huntingdon College. Zion Scott became the latest athlete from this area to sign a football scholarship with Gulf Coast Prep Sports Academy.

Lakin Maulden signed a softball college scholarship two years ago and, until Wednesday, she was the only female to sign an athletic scholarship. That changed when Redmon signed with Huntingdon.

“It’s been exciting,” Redmon said. “I am the first from dance or cheer to sign. I am very excited about that part.”

After being injured in the ninth grade, Redmon joined the cheerleading squad as a sophomore. Redmon later tried out for cheerleading at Huntingdon, but came up short for the football squad. It was a different story with the basketball squad.

“I didn’t make the cheer squad for the football team, but I made it for basketball,” Redmon said. “I’m thanking God that I got that far, especially as a female athlete.”

Redmon is excited to continue her education at Huntingdon, a school with a lot of spirit.

“I love the Huntingdon spirit,” Redmon said. “Everyone speaks to you when you’re on campus. They are a Christian university so I will be at home in my religion.”

Redmon will be under dance team head coach Amanda Glasscock.

“The coach is awesome,” Redmon said. “They don’t stop talking to you and they text me all the time. It’s been fun.”

Zion Scott was a mainstay for the Pike County football team during his career with the Bulldogs. Now he will be able to take his talents to Gulf Coast Prep Sports Academy, where he hopes to be a mainstay on the defensive side of the ball.

“I am every excited,” Scott said. “I thank God, my parents for their motivation, my uncle and my coaches for pushing me really hard. It’s so exciting and it’s a pleasing experience. I am excited to get there.”

Scott had his opportunity come about when GCPSA head coach Shawn Sellers came to Brundidge to check on another player. While on the visit, he watched Scott and loved what he saw.

“It was built in place,” Scott said. “He came there for another guy and then it just so happened to be that I was in the right place at the right time.”

Scott is excited to see all the talent that GCPSA will have on the field next season.

“There is a lot of talent,” Scott said. “I am excited to meet my players and my teammates. The coach is real down to earth. I am excited.”
