Cattlemen to auction off equipment Saturday

Cattleman James O. Johnson surveyed the items up for auction at the 15th Annual Pike County Cattlemen’s Equipment Auction Saturday at Cattleman Park. The auction begins at 8 a.m. and runs until. Auction items will be accepted until 5 p.m. Thursday.
Saturday is the big day for the Pike County Cattlemen’s Association big Equipment Auction Sale at Cattleman Park.
And, “big” is the word Cattleman Johnny Garrett used to describe the impact the fundraiser has in its support of Cattleman Park and the association’s youth programs.
“Big” is also an indication of the amount of equipment that will be on the auction block come Saturday morning.
“This is our 15th year for the Equipment Auction and every year it seems like it gets bigger and bigger,” Garrett said. “We really appreciate those who bring equipment for the auction and those who come to bid. The funds that we raise help with the upkeep of the building and the grounds and also support our youth scholarship programs. This year, the Pike County Cattlemen’s Association will award nine $500 scholarships and the Cattlewomen will award four $1,000 scholarships.”
Garrett said the scholarships will hopefully positively impact the lives of the recipients in a big way.
As for Saturday’s PCCA Equipment Auction Garrett said, “If you can think of it, we’ve got it.”
And, he stands behind his word.
“I just can’t think of anything that you would expect at an equipment auction that we won’t have,” Garrett said. “We even have a camper and the truck to pull it. We’ve got pickup trucks, heavy-duty trucks, police cars, motorcycles, bicycles and motorboats. We’ve got tractors and farm implements of every kind. We’ve got a lot of utility trailers, lawn mowers, weed eaters and anything you need to keep the yard up and use around the house – barbecue grills and other outdoor items.
“Why, we’ve got those big boiling pots that you use when you kill hogs. The kind you cook ‘chit’lins’ in and we’ve got wood barrels. Antique farm items always get the bidding going. There’s a Coke box on the grounds and a gas pump and a bathtub.
“It’s still early and no telling what we’ll have by cutoff time, at 5 p.m. Thursday. So we want everybody to come to the auction early and plan to stay late. We’ll have concessions so you can grab a bite and keep on bidding.”
Cattleman Park is asset to Pike County. It’s the site of rodeos, cattle shows, receptions, reunions and a wide variety of special events.
“We have a large covered arena and a building that seats 1,200 and it’s available to the public for a very reasonable fee,” Garrett said. “The PCCA Equipment Auction is our largest fundraiser. We have gotten great support from the community in the past and the response has been good for this year’s auction. There’s still plenty of time to put items on the block. The deadline is 5 p.m. Thursday. The auction will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday and run until …rain or shine.
