For the fourth year, the Pike County Chamber of Commerce will participate in the Alabama Tourism Department’s April Walking Tours event along with 25 other participating cities and town statewide.

Kathy Sauer, Pike County Chamber president, said all across the state, community leaders will guide free tours through the historic districts or courthouse square areas of their hometowns.

Sauer said, along the way, the tour guides will share personal remembrances and, perhaps, tall tales of days gone by.

The hour-long April Walking Tours will begin at 10 a.m. each Saturday in April, beginning Saturday and continuing on April 12, 21 and 28.

Saturday’s Troy Walking Tour will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Gazebo on the square in downtown Troy.

Shannon Crawford, Chamber vice president, said the Troy Walking Tours for April 2018 will include the historic downtown Square or the commercial tour and the historic homes tour, which will include College Street and other streets in the historic homes district.

“The 2018 April Walk Tours will begin with the buildings of historical significance on and around the square,” Crawford said. “We will begin Saturday’s tour with the Carroll Building, which is the home of the Pike County Chamber of Commerce.”

The walking tours are to be held to one hour so time will determine the number of tour stops at each walking tour, Crawford said.

Other buildings that could be included on Saturday’s walking tour are the Rock Building, Troy Grocery Company, O’Neil Building, Masonic Building, 81 North Square (Byrd Drugs), 76 North Square (Gellerstedt building), 73 North Square (Douglas Brothers), Watkins building, Wise building, Brantley Mercantile, Brantley Brothers, Farmers & Merchants Bank, Stanton’s, Rosenberg’s, Confederate Monument, Courthouse, First United Methodist Church and the Water Tower.

The old Troy post office (Johnson Center for the Arts), Troy City Hall and Academy Street School will also be included on the commercial tour.

After completing the commercial tour, the College Street historic homes will be the center of interest.

All of those who enjoy history and want to know more about the Troy’s historic commercial and residential areas are encouraged to participate in the April Walking Tours of Troy. No pre-registration is required. Just show up and start walking.
