CHHS goes 1-1 on day two

The Charles Henderson Lady Trojans continued play in the Gulf Coast Classic on Tuesday afternoon in Gulf Shores.

The Trojans knocked off Hamilton 9-4 in game one Tuesday. They finished off pool play with a 5-4 loss to Spanish Fort.

The Trojans will begin the single elimination portion of the tournament starting today.

Molly Kate Sanders got the start for the Trojans in game one. The senior pitched four innings and allowed five total runs, two of which were earned on seven hits.

Rose Snyder led the Trojans at the plate by going 2-3 with a homerun and four RBI.

Emma Kirkpatrick, Sanders, Ashlyn Shaver and Tucker Earles all had one hit for the Trojans.

The Trojans jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first when Snyder drove in Kirkpatrick on a triple. Garrett drove in the inning’s final run on a groundout.

The Trojans went up 6-0 in the second inning. Shaver scored the first run of the inning on a stolen base attempt from Madison Stewart. Stewart herself came around to score on a wild pitch, bringing the score to 4-0. Kirkpatrick and Snyder scored the final runs of the inning on an error.

Hamilton attempted to crawl back into the game with two runs in the third. The Trojans squashed all attempts of comeback when they answered with three runs in the third when Snyder connected on a three-run blast to score Shaver and Stewart.

Hamilton scored three runs in the top of the final inning, but ultimately fell four runs shy.

Kirkpatrick got the start for the Trojans in game two. Kirkpatrick pitched four innings and allowed four runs, three of which were earned on eight hits.

The Trojans finished with seven hits in the loss, led by Kirkpatrick who went 2-2. Sydni Garrett picked up a hit with two RBI, while Snyder, Lowery, Hughes and Stewart also picked up hits.

Like in game one, the Trojans jumped on the scoreboard in the first inning, this time to with one run. The Trojans had their first two batters reach and Whittaka Lowery smacked a single to score Kirkpatrick, putting the Trojans up 1-0.

The Toros got on the board in the third when they scored two runs to take a 2-1 lead.

With two outs in the fourth, Holly Hughes and Madison Stewart reached on an error and a double respectively. Hughes came around to score on an error to tie the game at two. Garrett followed up with a single to score both Madison Stewart and Kirkpatrick to give the Trojans a 4-2 lead.

The Toros picked up five more runs in the fifth and took the lead at 7-4 heading into the bottom of the fifth.

The Trojans went down 1-2-3 in the bottom half of the inning to end the contest.

The Trojans will begin play in the single-elimination portion of the tournament beginning today.
