The Pike Liberal Arts Patriots baseball team swept a doubleheader against Bessemer on Saturday afternoon in Troy.

The Patriots took game one 9-4 before closing out the day beating the Rebels in game two 11-3.

The two wins give the Patriots a record of 21-4.

Clay Barron got the start for the Patriots in game one. Barron pitched five innings. He allowed three total runs, with one earned run on six hits. Javon Christian pitched the final two innings and allowed one run.

Nathan Renfroe and Reed Jinright led the Patriots at the plate by picking up three hits a piece and totaling four RBI. Cody Hollis finished with two hits, while Davis Allen, Wood Jinright, Cole McWhorter, Trevor Barron and Holt Steed each had one hit.

The first four Patriot runs came on the board in the first inning. Reed Jinright tied the game at one with a single driving in Hollis for the Patriots’ first run. Reed Jinright came around to score on a groundout by brother Wood Jinright. The Patriots also had an RBI single by Trevor Barron to go up 3-1. The Patriots scored their final run of the inning when Steed reached on an error to go up 3-1.

Up 4-3, the Patriots added another run in the fourth when Renfroe singled to center.

The Patriots scored two more runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to secure the five-run win.

Jade Sikes took the ball as the Patriots starter in game two. Sikes pitched the first five innings. He allowed three unearned runs on one hit. He struck out six batters. Javon Christian picked up the win for the Patriots after he pitched 2.1 shutout innings while allowing just one hit.

The Patriots finished with six hits led by Reed Jinright who went 2-4 with four RBI. Davis Allen, Barron, Sikes and Max Copeland each had one hit.

The big inning for the Patriots came in the fourth inning. Already up 3-0, the Patriots scored four runs to go up 7-0. Copeland drove in the first run of the inning on a fielder’s choice. Allen put the Gophers up 6-0 with a single to left to score Copeland and Hollis. Reed Jinright drove in the final run of the inning with a double to left, scoring Allen.

The Patriots added three more runs in the fifth before scoring their final run in the sixth.

The Patriots will be back in action on Friday when they travel to Bessemer to take on the Rebels in another doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m.
