Local residents and interested people from outside the city packed Brundidge City Hall Tuesday night for the public hearing regarding Bobby and Mary Poe’s request to consider rezoning property located at 305 South Main Street from R-2 (Medium Density Residential) to R-3 (Multi-Family Residential). The public hearing was held prior to the council’s regular meeting a 6 p.m. at Brundidge City Hall.

Bobby Poe spoke briefly to the council about the plans to locate an Adult/Teen Challenge facility for women in the home. Poe said it was the couple’s vision to open a facility to help women rehab from addictions.

Adult/Teen Challenge is a Christ-centered, faith-based program that offers solutions for those struggling with life-controlling problems, such as alcohol and drug addictions so they can live hope-filled and purposeful lives, Poe said.

Robert Angles, Alabama Teen Challenge executive director, also spoke to the council and those in attendance. Angles said the Adult/Teen Challenge facility will not be a long-term residential facility. It will be a place where teens and adult women who are struggling with addictions can get off the streets and into a facility where their immediate needs can be addressed.

The facility has six bedrooms and can accommodate up to 10 if placed two to a room.

No one spoke in opposition to the rezoning request, which was recommended for approval by the City of Brundidge Planning Commission on February 8.

During its regular meeting, the council considered the rezoning request and voted unanimously in favor of rezoning to property at 305 South Main from R-2 to R-3. Applause and cheers followed the vote.

The council also considered a request by Delana Flowers, founder and president of the One Stop Teen Center on South Main Street in Brundidge, for billiard tables for the center.

Flowers said the center has table tennis and air hockey tables and basketball games as well as board games. The center also has study areas for individual tutoring and homework and a floor for dancing. The billiard tables would be an added activity for the teens.

The council voted unanimously in favor of the request.

The council voted in favor of Heather Minton as the replacement for the late Delatha Mobley on the city’s Planning Commission Board.

In the mayor’s report, Mayor Isabell Boyd’s informed the council that the city’s application for a CDBG (grant) for a splash pad park was not approved.

She announced that Pike County Elementary School will host Kids Day on March 23 with162 kindergarten students from across the county in attendance. The Easter Egg Extravaganza planned for the city’s children will be on March 24. The Easter Sunrise Service will be on April 1 at Bulldog Stadium. The Miss Brundidge and Little Miss Brundidge Pageant will be April 21 at Pike County High School.

Boyd reminded the council and those in attendance that county schools will out for Spring Break next week and to be aware of children at play.

The Brundidge City Council meets at 6 p.m. on the first and third Tuesdays of the month at Brundidge City Hall. The meetings are open to the public.
