The Pike County Board of Education continues to focus its efforts on providing dual enrollment opportunities for its students that will prepare them for success in college and in the workforce.

Dr. Mark Bazzell, superintendent of education, told the board at its Monday meeting that 107 students are dual enrolled.

“That’s 23 percent of the students that are eligible for dual enrollment,” Bazzell said. “We are working toward other programs that will also prepare our students for opportunities that are available in this area’s workforce.”

Bazzell signed a proclamation designating February 17-24 as FFA Week and had words of praise for the outstanding work being done at the Agriscience Academy in Goshen.

The FFA officers at Goshen High School attended the board meeting and highlighted FFA Week activities at their school. They presented the superintendent and the board members with floral arrangements, “our first,” they said.

In new business, the board:

• Approved members of the System Textbook Adoption Committee for the 2017-2018 school year.
• Approved Budget Amendment #1.
• Approved proclamation to designate February 17-24 as FFA Week.
• Approved permission for the Pike County Chamber of Commerce Education Committee to use an activity bus for the Junior Ambassador trip to Montgomery on March 20.
• Approved permission for Brooke Terry to attend the Child Nutrition Director’s spring conference and the Alabama School Nutrition Association’s meeting March 15-18 in Birmingham. Expenses to be paid by Child Nutrition.
• Approved permission for Aretha Jackson, Carolyn Wilson, Lucille Taylor, Deborah Sessions, Annie Reynolds, Alecia Jones, Sara Wilson and Karen Langston to attend the Alabama School Nutrition Association’s meeting March 16-18 in Birmingham. Expenses to be paid by Child Nutrition.
• Approved permission for Stephanie McCall and Jeff McClure to attend the Alabama State Department of Education Summer Professional Learning Conference, July 9-13 in Mobile. Expenses will be paid with IDEA, At-Risk and General funds.
• Approved permission for Mark Head to attend the High Schools that Work Conference, July 11-14 in Orlando, Florida. Expenses to be paid with IDEA funds.
• Approved permission for Jennifer Hornsby to attend the AASBO Professional Certificate Program and Annual Conference May 1-4 in Orange Beach. Expenses to be paid by General Funds.
• Approved permission for Stacy Freeman to attend the Local School Financial Management Conference, March 5-6 in Tuscaloosa. Expenses will be paid by local school funds.
• Approved permission for Sharon Sullivan to attend the Summer Learning Conference (MEGA) July 9-13. Expenses to be paid by Title I funds.
• Approved permission for Sgt. 1st Class Aaron Young to attend the 2018 JROTC National Drill Competition April 13-15 in Louisville, Kentucky. There will be no expense to the Board.
• Approved permission for Major Lane to attend the 2018 CLAS Annual Summer Convention, June 10-13 in Mobile. Expenses to be paid with Title I funds.

In personnel action, the board:

• Approved to reinstate one and a half days of sick leave to Mary Bradshaw for an on-the –job injury, January 29-30. Injury was due to a bus accident.
• Accepted the resignation of Keyuna Banks, adjunct teacher at Pike County High School, effective January 29, retroactive.
• Approved volunteer status for Houston Daniel, baseball, Goshen High School.
• Approved permission for Cindy Boswell to attend the State Department of Education Educator Training February 26-27 in Montgomery.
• Accepted the resignation of Kelvin Larkin, bus driver. Effective immediately.
