Trojans knock off South Alabama

The Troy Trojan men completed a sweep of rival South Alabama by defeating the Jaguars 80-63 on Saturday night. The Troy women’s basketball team defeated the Jaguars to begin the night 82-71.

The win for the Trojans improved their record on the season to 10-13 overall and 4-6 in Sun Belt Conference play. The win ended a short two-game losing streak for the Trojans.

The Trojans led for all but 4:10 of the first half and by as many as nine points.

Seniors Wesley Person connected on two-3-pointers in the opening half. The Trojans went into half time holding a 40-32 lead despite being out shot by the Jaguars 40 to 36 percent.

The Trojans were able to stretch their lead out to 12 at 53-41 near the midway mark of the second half.

The Trojans led by as many as 20 points in the contest and that came in the final minute of play.

Person finished the game as the leading scorer with 18 points. He connected on four of his 10 3-point attempts and five of 14 overall.

Jason Varnado finished with 17 points on five of 12 shooting. Alex Hicks finished with 14 points, while B.J. Miller had 13. Kevin Baker finished with a double-double in the win with 11 points and 10 rebounds. He connected on three of his seven 3-point shots.

The Trojans will be back in action on Thursday when they host Arkansas State beginning at 7:15 after the conclusion of the women’s game at 5:00 p.m.
