Seniors shine: Alford and Hollis lead Eagles to a 65-50 area win over Central Hayneville

The Goshen Eagles knocked off Central Hayneville 65-50 in a key area matchup on Tuesday night.

The win for the Eagles gives them a 4-2 record in area play. The Eagles needed a Calhoun loss to Luverne on Tuesday night to force a tie for the regular season title. However Calhoun knocked off Luverne leaving the Eagles in second place.

The Eagles and Lions got off to a blistering start on Tuesday. The two teams put up a combined 33 points in the opening quarter, but it was the Lions that took an 18-15 lead into the second.

Seniors Michael Hollis and Zack Alford scored all but five of the Eagles points in the second quarter. The Eagles were able to even the score at 23 in the second quarter thanks to an 8-0 run. The Eagles used a 10-0 run later in the quarter to go up 33-25.

Iyan Hinkle brought the crowd to their feet when he nailed a long distance shot at the buzzer to send the game into halftime with the Eagles holding a 40-28 lead.

The Eagles built on their lead in the third quarter. Six different players scored in the quarter and the Eagles went into the fourth leading 55-41.

The Lions outscored the Eagles 13-10 in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t nearly enough to get back in the game.

Hollis led all scorers with 17 points, while Alford finished with 16. The Eagles had four players – Raquan Martin, Hinkle, Devin Bell and Tavares Adams –  score six points.

The Eagles will travel on Thursday to take on Highland Home in a makeup game that was originally scheduled for January 20.

The afternoon will start with junior varsity team at 4:30.
