John Lewis to give the keynote speech at Leadership Conference

U.S. Congressman John Lewis of Georgia will be the keynote speaker for the Opening Session of the 17th Annual Leadership Conference on Friday, February 2 at Sartain Hall  on the campus of Troy University.

Lewis, a native of Pike County, is an American politician and a prominent Civil Rights leader. He is the U.S. Representative for Georgia’s 5th Congressional District and has served since 1987. He is the dean of the Georgia Congressional Delegation.

Shelia Jackson, City of Troy public relations director, said it is a great honor to have Congressman Lewis address the Leadership Conference.

“Congressman Lewis is a hometown hero,” Jackson said. “He has been called one of the most courageous people in the Civil Rights Movement. He has dedicated his life to protecting human rights and securing civil liberties. He is one of us and we are proud to welcome him back home.”

The 17th Annual Leadership Conference will open Friday night, February 2 at Sartain Hall and continue on Saturday at the Troy University Trojan Center. Dr. S.D. James is the chair of this year’s conference.

“The morning session speakers will include Melvin Carrington Smith, Sr., Dr. Khaalida T. Forbes and Dr. Dionne Rosser-Mims,” Jackson said. “Student speakers will be Dr.  Forbes, Theo Moore and Chad Sanders. More speakers will be added in the next two weeks.”

The closing luncheon will be in the Trojan Center Ballrooms.

“The 17th Annual Leadership Conference is a wonderful opportunity to hear outstanding speakers and presenters,” Jackson said. “Those who attend will be inspired and motivated to greater leadership roles in their home communities and beyond. So, we encourage those who are committed to the betterment of their communities not to miss out on this opportunity for leadership and fellowship.”

Adult registration is $30. Student registration is $15.
