Credit card skimmers found at local gas station

The Troy Police Department has removed credit card skimmers from two gas pumps at a local gas station Wednesday after getting a report from management.

“The skimming device was not visible from the outside of the pump and the consumer would have no way to know that their credit or debit card information had been compromised,” said Troy Police Chief Randall Barr.

Barr said other pumps and in-store registers were not affected. Barr would not release the name of the gas station, but said it is located in the 100 block of U.S. Highway 231 South. Barr said residents should be monitoring accounts for suspicious activity regardless of whether they swiped their card at this particular station.

“Any time a credit or debit card is used as payment, there is a chance that the information on the card can be compromised,” Barr said. “Consumers paying with credit or debit cards are encouraged to check their accounts often and report any unauthorized or fraudulent use to their credit card company or banking institution immediately and then file a report with police.”

The case is still under investigation by the Troy Police Department.
