The Brundidge City Council approved a request Tuesday that could bring more business to the town on U.S. Highway 231.

The council approved a rezoning request Tuesday at an early afternoon meeting to rezone a vacant lot adjacent to U.S. Highway 231 South near the former landfill from reserved residential to commercial. The property is approximately six acres.

Industrial Developers LLC. brought forward the request to the Brundidge Planning Commission to rezone six acres of the property for commercial use back in October.

“I grew up right outside of Brundidge and I don’t want a prison here,” said Jason Senn, who represented the company at that meeting. “This is to attract a restaurant or a truck stop or any good business that is willing to come. This all hinges on the service road that goes by the property. The hope is that attracts businesses because you wouldn’t have to spend $100,000 to build a turn lane off the highway there.”

A that time, commission president Herbert Reynolds said residents had contacted him about the rezoning thinking that the acreage was being rezoned to prepare to place a prison there.

“This is not being rezoned to put a prison here,” Reynolds said then. “A prison could not be placed in this zoning.”

The council also approved for AT&T to make modifications to a cell tower at 655 South Main Street.

The council also had a hearing on the agenda to hear an appeal from Barbara Smith on termination from employment with the city, but Mayor Isabell Boyd said Smith withdrew the request for the appeal.

The next meeting of the Brundidge City Council will be January 2.
