COATS FOR KIDS: Troy Sigma Chi gives back to Head Start

As temperatures drop, kids at Head Start won’t have to worry about the wintry weather thanks to the Troy University chapter of Sigma Chi.

The fraternity brothers adopted Head Start as their philanthropy last year and have been pouring their community service efforts into the local organization all semester.

James Massey, community service chair for the fraternity, said the brothers had committed a total of nearly 200 hours to Head Start and decided they wanted to give more than just money for their fall philanthropy.

“That was an idea that one of our brothers had,” Massey said. “We usually just cut a check, but this year we wanted to do something more active with the brothers and give back more material things so that it would mean a little bit more.”

So the fraternity raised $2,000 to purchase a coat for each child – 120 coats in all – as well as flowers and coffee cups for the teachers. The fraternity also raised an additional $2,000 to give to the organization.

Dorsey Fayson, Head Start director, said she is grateful for the fraternity’s service and gifts.

“This is the true definition of the reason for the season,” Fayson said. “These are college students; they didn’t have to do this. But they thought about us and servicing our students. They’ve been faithful spending time with the children and giving back to our program.”

Will Walker, chapter president, and Jamie Wiznack also helped to plan and coordinate the event.
