Sunday alcohol sales referendum opens for voting today

Published 3:00 am Tuesday, October 10, 2017

After a months-long process, the vote on whether to allow Sunday alcohol sales in the City of Troy is finally taking place.

The polls will be open today from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. for residents to vote on a single question: “Do you favor the adoption of Act No. 2017-309, of the regular session of the Alabama Legislature authorizing the sale of alcoholic beverages after 12:00 p.m. on Sundays in the City of Troy?” Residents will be able to answer “Yes” or “No.”

If passed, the council will have to enact Sunday sales through a local ordinance, in which they could choose to add more parameters on the policy. The council cannot, however, choose to expand alcohol sales outside of the scope of the question on the referendum.

Although there is no regularly scheduled meeting until October 24, the council could enact Sunday sales as early as October 18 if they call a special meeting once the results are certified.

If no special actions are taken regarding the ordinance, the first reading will be held on October 27 and  a vote would take place on November 4.

The polling places for the election are as follows:

• District 1 – Troy Public Library

• District 2 – National Guard Armory

• District 3 – Troy Parks and Recreation Facility

• District 4 – First Baptist Church Activities Building

• District 5 – Pike County Courthouse

Photo identification is required to vote. Only Troy residents are eligible to vote in this election.
