Alcohol will soon be sold on Sundays in the City of Troy after citizens voted Tuesday in favor of the policy.

Citizens voted 1,422 to 548 in favor of allowing Sunday alcohol sales, a majority of over 72 percent.

City Clerk Alton Starling said about 17 percent of registered voters turned out for the election.

“The biggest thing is that the people did go out and exercise their constitutional right to vote and let their voices be heard,” said council president Marcus Paramore. “I think it was more a vote for economic development and growth than it was for another day to buy or sell alcohol. I think residents are excited about the way our community is growing and want to continue that. People have wanted different restaurants and retail to come and I think this is a step towards that.”

“Yes” votes outweighed “no” votes in every district and in absentee voting.

Now that the people have voted in favor of Sunday alcohol sales, it will be up to the city council to draft an ordinance enacting the policy and possibly adding further parameters to it.

As it is written, the vote would allow alcohol to be sold on Sundays after noon both on and off premises.

The council could further limit the scope if they choose, but could not expand outside of those parameters without further legislative action by the State.

Paramore said the council will follow normal protocol with this ordinance, which means that the council will have a first reading of the ordinance at their Tuesday, October 24 meeting and would then vote on it at their November 14 meeting.

The city council got approval from the State Legislature to allow the referendum earlier this year for the citizens to decide on the issue.
