Troy sophomore running back Jabir Daughtry-Frye has been placed on the scout team while he continues to heal up after last year’s season-ending knee surgery.

Jabir Frye played in one snap in the season opener against Boise State, but has yet to see any action since.

“He is coming off a knee injury,” said head coach Neal Brown. “We tried to make a go of it in week one. He has had some issues with the surgically repaired knee, so he is not up to full speed.”

Frye got into 10 games for the Trojans last year. He accumulated 139 rushing yards on 20 carries last year with one touchdown. He also made his mark on special teams by returning a kick 100 yards for a Trojan touchdown against Clemson.

Frye eased back into duty during fall camp. He was a limited participant but was able to get his fair share of reps, giving the team doctor and the Troy coaching staff confidence in a healthy return.

“You gotta think about it,” Brown said. “Those ACL injuries take about a year. So he (injured his leg) the first week in November (last year). We tried to get him ready to play. They did what’s called a Kingconn, which measures your knee– how it bends and stuff. Basically, doctor said ‘Let’s try him.’ I really didn’t think he was full speed. I didn’t want to put him at risk for injury. He’s a guy that we’ve got really, really high hopes for. He does a little bit of light work, but he’s not doing really any full-speed work right now.”

Frye is still contributing to practice on a daily basis for the Trojans. Last week, coach Brown named him the scout team’s offensive player of the week.

“This gives you some insight to some guys you will hear down the road,” Brown said. “Jabir Frye did a good job at being Larry Rose all week. He is not at full speed, but he gave us a really good look as Larry Rose in some of our scout periods last week.”

The Trojans are looking to make 2017 a redshirt season for Frye.
