Home sweet home: Trojans begin region play at home against Carroll

The Charles Henderson Trojans look to get into the win column this Friday night when they host region foe Carroll at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

After a wet workweek preparing for UMS-Wright, the Trojans practice schedule this week has been back to normal.

“We have had a good week,” said head coach Brad McCoy. “Luckily this week we haven’t had any weather that pushed us inside. We have been able to get our two-a-day practices in and we have been really sharp. We had to make corrections coming off the UMS game and I think we did that.”

The Trojans trailed 21-2 to UMS-Wright last week before attempting a strong comeback that would come up just short.

“We started out slow,” McCoy said. “We had some penalties not go our way and some judgment calls that could go either way. We started off slow on offense and it put us in a hole going into half. In the second half, our guys finally started to wake up.”

The Trojans were able to get back to within 5 points before the Bulldogs scored a late touchdown to put the game out of reach. Even with the loss, McCoy was pleased with the team’s effort, but said they need to find a way to come away with wins against good teams.

“Our guys aren’t going to quit,” McCoy said. “We have to find a way to beat the good ones and that is why we put UMS on the schedule. It’s a good indicator of what kind of team we are or can be.”

The Trojans will have another chance to beat a good one when the host an Eagles team that is the defending Region 2 champion.

The Eagles are 1-0 after they shutout Daleville a week ago 39-0.

“They have a lot of kids back,” McCoy said. “It’s going to be a task and our guys understand that. We watched them all week; last year’s and this year’s video. They understand the challenge at hand and we have to be sharp to have a chance.”

The Trojans aren’t expecting a flashy Eagles offense, but one that will try and run the ball all night long.

“They are going to run right at you,” McCoy said. “They aren’t very complicated. They are good at the line of scrimmage and they have a good running back. They run the ball down hill. They want to convert first downs. They are not going to wow you with a lot of down-the-field throws.”

The Trojans are 26-14 all-time against Carroll, but it was the Eagles getting the better of the Trojans last year winning 34-14.

Kick off is set for 7 p.m.
