The Pike County Bulldogs look to clean up their mistakes in their region opener Friday night against B.B. Comer.

After beginning the season 1-0, the Bulldogs hit the practice field to prepare for the first region game of the season.

“The guys understand this is a region game,” said head coach Fred Holland. “Our preparation has been pretty good, the guys are listening quite well and the coaches are doing a good job pushing them.”

Last week, the Bulldogs kicked off the season with a thrilling win at home against Elba in the game’s final minute. The Bulldogs rode that momentum into Monday, but as soon as they hit the practice field, they put it behind them.

“We try to stay focused,” Holland said. “I always say enjoy it on Friday, but come back in on Sunday and forget it. No one cares what you did last Friday. We try to concentrate this week. I know it was a big win for them, but we try to take it day by day.”

One thing they have been focused on from last week is cleaning up their mistakes. The Bulldogs turned it over two times in the first half and also had a punt blocked and punt snap that flew over the punter’s head and into the end zone for a Tiger touchdown.

“We spent more time working on it,” Holland said. “If you’re not willing to redo, then you have a problem. We spent a lot of time on redo’s whether it was offensively, defensively or special teams. All aspects of the game are needed.”

The Bulldogs turn their attention to region foe B.B. Comer and the Bulldogs look to storm out of the gate and get their region schedule off to a good start.

“It’s very important to get on the winning side of it,” Holland said. “Every time you can win, you put yourself that much farther between your opponents. In order to do that, you have to have a good week of practice and you have to be focused.”

The Tigers come in with an 0-1 record after they fell to Weaver last week 47-16.

“They have a big team,” Holland said. “They don’t have as much speed as we do, but they do the little things. They don’t do a whole lot offensively or defensively; but what they do, they do a good job at.” They have some big players– a lot bigger than us. We just have to do our jobs.”

The Bulldogs feature the run game offensively, but late in last week’s game, the passing game took a step forward.

“We work on it a lot. It may not always show up in the game,” Holland said. “As Jaidyn (Wilson) gains more experience and makes more plays, our offense can be outstanding.”
