The Goshen Eagles kick off region play this Friday night when they hit the road to take on Calhoun.

“The guys have had a really good week,” said head coach Bart Snyder. “We worked hard and got better at what we do. I hope that will carry over as we work each week.”

The Eagles (1-0) began the season last week with a win on the road against Ariton.

“It’s always great to have the opportunity to play a team of their caliber,” Snyder said. “We were very fortunate to come out with a win. It gives us a lot of positives to build on. Looking at the game film, there are a lot of areas we need to work on.”

Offensively, the Eagles have focused on the little things like blocking, wide receivers running the right routes and running backs hitting the right holes.

“We feel like if we can do those things offensively, we will get better,” Snyder said. “Defensively, we feel like we need to get focused on seeing the alignments and lining up right.”

Last week, the Eagles had a 90-yard scoring drive with under a minute to play in the first half. They rode that momentum throughout the second half. Playing well in the first half’s final minutes, in addition to playing well to begin the second half, is a point of emphasis for the Eagles.

“You practice for those things and our guys have worked very hard,” Snyder said. “To go 95 yards in less than 30 seconds speaks a lot about the kids’ character and composure. We are very excited about that.”

The Eagles begin region play against Calhoun and Snyder looks to get off to a fast start.

“It’s really big,” Snyder said. “It will be nice to get that under our belt. It would make us better and stand tall in the region. It doesn’t get any easier in our region.”

The Tigers come into the game with an 0-1 record after they were shutout 49-0 on the road at Keith last week.

“Calhoun is a good ball team, but we don’t know a lot about them,” Snyder said. “They have a new coach. We don’t know what to expect. We are going to have to be ready and focused on what we do.”

Snyder is looking for his squad to be more self-disciplined this week.

“It’s going to take that this week to win,” Snyder said. “We’ve got to be focused on ourselves and making ourselves better and playing assignment football. We have to be focused on us and do the right things.”

Kick off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
