The City of Brundidge is now the owner of the former BB&T property at 222 North Main Street in Brundidge.

The Brundidge City Council closed on the purchase of the property at 11 a.m. Friday with Mayor Isabell Boyd signing the necessary documents for the $192,500 purchase.

The property includes a 5,400-square-foot building and a 100×242-foot paved lot.

Boyd said the building will be renovated for use as Brundidge City Hall, which is now housed in the historic Bass House at 146 South Main Street.

“The purchase of this property is a big accomplishment for the council as well as the Brundidge community,” Boyd said. “We are running out of space at city hall’s present location so it is a good move. We will be able to put a facelift on City Hall.”

The city council has voted to dedicate $200,000 to the renovations necessary for the former BB&T building to meet the needs of the city’s administrative offices.

The new city hall building will house the current city offices and will feature a drive-thru where residents can make utility payments. The drive-thru will be open from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
“And, the big clock will be back,” she said. “We will all welcome having the clock back on Main Street.”

No target date has been set for City Hall’s move from South Main Street to North Main Street.

“Now that the property has been purchased, we can begin to move ahead with renovation plans,” Boyd said. “Once the renovation gets underway, we’ll have a better idea as to when the project could be completed.”

Boyd said no plans have yet been formulated for the present City Hall building.

“Some ideas are being considered but the decision will be up to the council,” she said. “The building would make a good information center and the library often needs additional space for its children’s programs. The council will be open to ideas.”

The Brundidge City Council meets at 6 p.m. on the first and third Tuesdays of the month at Brundidge City Hall. The meetings are open to the public.
