The fall session of DivorceCare, a weekly divorce support group, has been scheduled for September 10 through December 3 at Glenwood United Methodist Church. The groups will meet from 3 until 4:30 p.m. on Sundays. Pastor Danielle May said DivorceCare is a nationwide support curriculum designed for those who are divorced or separated and is lay led and lay driven.

Brian May, a group lay leader, said most people will say that separation and divorce are the most painful and stressful experiences they have ever faced. They feel isolated and have questions about issues they have never faced before.

“DivorceCare helps people who are facing those challenges and helps them move toward rebuilding their lives,” he said. “At each session, the group will watch a video that features top experts on divorce and recovery subjects including facing anger, depression and loneliness, financial survival, forgiveness and reconciliation, moving on and growing closer to God. The videos have a magazine format that features interviews and real-life case studies.”

After viewing the video, the participants will spend time together as a support group.

“The group will discuss what was presented in the video and what is going on in their lives.”

May said sharing with the group is voluntarily and the privacy of those who feel uncomfortable talking about what is going on in their lives is respected.

“Some participants find help and discover hope just from listening, “ he said.

Danielle May said it’s often difficult for those who have not been through separation and divorce to understand the hurt and confusion one is experiencing.

“If they don’t understand, it’s hard to help,” she said. “But our DivorceCare group is led by people who have been through divorce and have successfully rebuilt their lives. They understand because they have been in the same place and can show others how to deal with the hurt caused by their separation and divorce.”

Although the DivorceCare sessions begin on September 10, each session is self-contained so participants do not have to attend in sequence.

“Participants will be able to pick up any sessions missed in the next cycle,” May said.
