Sarah Talbot Lawrence

Mrs. Sarah Talbot Lawrence, 96, of Eufaula, Alabama, passed away Friday, August 11, 2017 in Birmingham, Alabama.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 16, 2017, at 2 P.M., at St. James Episcopal Church with Rev. Drake Whitelaw officiating.  Burial will follow in Green Hills Cemetery in Troy at 4:30 P.M., with Chapman Funeral Home directing.  The family will receive friends from 1 P.M. until 2 P.M., prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the St. James Episcopal Church, 100 St. James Place, Eufaula, Alabama 36027 or to the Shorter Mansion 340 N. Eufaula Ave., Eufaula, Alabama 36027.

Mrs. Lawrence was born January 24, 1921 in Troy, Alabama to James Warnock and Margaret Black Talbot.  Sarah was a teacher.  She taught English, Spanish and Literature at Charles Henderson High School in Troy, at Troy State University and in the Atlanta, Georgia City School System.  She was a great reader of books, a world traveler, a student of history, an avid worker of crossword puzzles and a good story teller.  She loved to talk about the people, places and events of Southeastern Alabama of the past and was quite interested in World War II, which she simply referred to as “The War”.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Reuben Ozier Lawrence, her daughter Ann Lawrence Ballenger, her son-in-law Thomas Earle Ballenger, her sisters Peggy Talbot Elam and Mary Talbot Lowman and her brother Bailey Montgomery Talbot IV.

Mrs. Lawrence is survived by her son: James Talbot (Kathy) Lawrence of Birmingham, Alabama; her grandson: James Talbot (Jen) Lawrence II of Franklin, Tennessee; her great granddaughter: Madelyn Grace Lawrence of Franklin, Tennessee.

Sarah will be greatly missed by her family, her friends and the many students whose lives she touched over the years.

Serving as pallbearers in Eufaula will be: Ben Garrison, Derek Thomas, Frank Garrison, Larry Thomas, Paul Voors, and Scott McCathran, and in Troy will be Buck Corley, Chris Schubert, Mike Amos, Robert (K.T.) Cole, Sonny Williford and Tom Davis.
