GIVING BACK: Alpha Gamma Delta packs snacks for school kids

Troy Elementary School students in grades K-2 will receive a bag of nutritional snacks on the first day of school. Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority at Troy University will provide 450 snack bags to the students as part of its new philanthropy, Fighting Hunger.

Jennifer Brown, Alpha Gamma Delta recruitment advisor, said the Alpha Gamma Delta sisters are excited about the new philanthropy, which is Fighting Hunger.

Brown said one in seven Americans struggle with hunger.  Worldwide, 42 million people struggle with hunger, including 13 million children and six million senior citizens.

“Food insecurity affects our schools, our community and our nation,” Brown said. “That is why ‘Fighting Hunger is very important to our chapter.

“Alpha Gamma Delta wants to be a part of the solution to the problem of hunger in our schools. We are happy to give back to our community in this way.”

Brown said each bag the young students will receive on Wednesday will include juice, a bottle of water, Gold Fish and Gummies.

“Providing snacks for children in grades K-2 will be an ongoing project throughout the year,” Brown said. “We plan to provide teachers with healthy snacks to keep in their classrooms as they are needed.”

Alpha Gamma Delta is an international fraternity, founded on May 30,1904 at Syracuse University. The fraternity promotes academic excellence, philanthropic giving, ongoing leadership and personal development, and a spirit of loving sisterhood.

Its current membership exceeds 170,000. There are currently 182 collegiate chapter and more than 250 alumnae clubs.
