Walter Wilson didn’t step away from a regular payday to go into the gospel music ministry,

He wouldn’t have done that. But God allowed it to happen.

“I was making a decent salary and people told me that I had lost my mind,” Wilson said, laughing. “That was eight years ago and I’m still losing my mind every day.”

Wilson was called into the ministry at Bethel Baptist Church in Dothan in 2009.

The Brundidge native had been singing and writing songs but it was not until he was saved that he understood God’s plan and purpose for his life.

“I grew up hearing my dad, my sister and Fannie Davenport sing gospel music,” Wilson said. “I didn’t have a background in music, no lessons or anything like that. My voice, my love of music, was and is a gift from God.”

Wilson was singing in the choir at Bethel Baptist Church and was going with the pastor to minister to those in drug rehabilitation facilities. It was in those places that God gave him the desire to use his talents to bring people to a closer relationship with the Lord.

“God gave me the desire,” Wilson said. “He showed me what I was to do. I don’t know how to explain what happened. It was like a chain reaction. I found joy and purpose in the gospel music ministry and that joy is with me every day.”

Wilson said he has never looked back and he’s never worried a day that his needs will not be met.

“God led me to where I am,” he said.

Walter Wilson is at a very comfortable place in his life. He’s singing gospel music and writing gospel songs and he is certain that he is in the right place at the right time.

“God has opened doors for me and He continues to open doors,” Wilson said. “Anywhere that I am invited to go and sing, I go and sing. I take every opportunity to share God’s love, His mercy and His grace.”

Wilson’s ministry is funded through love offerings. He is confident that what he receives will be sufficient for his needs.

“I’m into the gospel ministry 24-7,” he said. “I’m willing to go any type of event where I have the opportunity to share the gospel. There’s nothing to big or to small. I just love singing about God’s love.”
