Dawson Bradford’s hit sailed just over the shortstop’s glove and handed the Troy AAA team their second straight walk-off win on Friday.
The Troy team defeated Moulton 7-6 in the 2017 Dixie Youth AAA State Tournament after being down 5-0.
“I wish they wouldn’t do it because my heart isn’t built for it,” said Troy manager Adam Brookins. “That’s the way this team has been for years. We went to state a few years ago and we had to come back to win ball games. It never fazes them and this is proof. No moment is too big for what they have going on right now.”
Kade Brookins got the start for Troy and after a shaky first inning he settled down and pitched four innings.
“That was big for us because we needed him to pitch four innings for us tonight,” Brookins said. “It really sets our pitching up again. Winning this ball game tonight is big because we get a bye tomorrow which means it’s one less game we have to pitch.”
Cole Pugh pitched the final two innings and shut the door leading up to the winning bottom of the sixth.
Troy had 10 hits by 10 different batters.
Kade Brookins struggled to throw strikes in the opening inning. He walked two batters and had two wild pitches leading to two early runs. Tripp Engle also drove in a run on a sacrifice fly scoring Kain Parker and at innings end Moulton led Troy 3-0.
Moulton added to their lead in the second when they scored two more runs. Braylon Dame scored on an error and Noah Dutton scored on another wild pitch to bring the score to 5-0.
Troy sent 10 batters to the plate in the second and scored four runs. Barron hit an RBI triple to score Brookins, Tyler McLendon singled in Barron, KaNeil Lewis drove in McLendon on a sacrifice fly and Slade Russell drove in the final run of the inning on a single to score Cade Edwards.
After Brookins had his first clean inning in the third, Troy had a chance to tie or even take the lead in the bottom of the inning when they had two runners on base, but couldn’t push across a run.
After another 1-2-3 inning by Brookins, Troy once again had the tying and leading run on base in the fourth without once again being able to get the big hit they needed.
Cole Pugh escaped some danger in the fifth inning. Moulden pushed across one run on a walk and two singles but stranded two runners to keep it a two-run game at 6-4.
Troy got the big they needed in the bottom of the fifth when Jackson Booth doubled in Pruitt Vaughn to even the game at six heading into the final inning.
Moulton got the first two outs of the inning quickly. Down to their last out, Jordan McBryde hit a double over the center fielder’s head to set Bradford up to be the hero. Bradford hit a soft line drive that just fell out of the shortstop’s glove and McBryde raced around third to score the winning run.
“It’s awesome,” Bradford said. “It’s a relief that it’s over and we came out with a W.”
Troy will play at 6 p.m. Sunday against South Bibb.
