“I don’t know where you can find another sale like that,” said Kim May, Troy Salvation Army Service Center director. “As hot as the weather is, it’s hard to even think about the fall, but it’s the time of year that we have to get rid of the summer clothes to make way for the clothes for fall and winter.”

May said the Thrift Store is well stocked with women’s summer attire.

“We have some really nice items and buying one and getting two free is almost unheard of, but that’s the sale that’s going on at the Salvation Army Thrift Store in Troy.”

May said she is often asked why just the women’s clothing. Why not the clothing for men and children?

“We just don’t get in enough of men’s and children’s clothing to have a sale like that,” she said. “I’m not sure why. One reason may be that men wear just about the same things year around and, too, they don’t shop as often as women so they don’t have as many clothes. As for children, I think their clothing is either handed down or over or sold at yard sales. We just don’t get a lot children’s clothing.  We would appreciate donations of men’s and children’s clothing because we don’t have what we need.”

May said the Salvation Army is a non-profit organization and all the funds raised are used to help people here at home.

“Items and money that are donated help friends and neighbors in need,” she said. “Here in Pike County, there are many people who are in need due to different circumstances. With the temperature and the heat index so high, more people will be needing help with their utilities. The elderly who are living on a fixed incomes genuinely need help. They often have to decide between paying their utility bills or buy medicine. That’s a difficult choice to have to make.”

May said the Salvation Army always needs nonperishable food items for the pantry, especially meats.

“And we always need volunteers,” she said. “It might seem too soon to be thinking ahead to the Christmas season but now is the time for churches and organizations to begin thinking about organizing bell ringers for our Red Kettle Campaign. We operate our kettles with volunteers because that means more money to help people in our community. We appreciate all donations and the volunteer spirit of our community.”
