Ebenezer Baptist Church in Highland Home will host The Kempters in concert at 7 p.m. Saturday. Admission is free; a love offering will be taken.

Kenny Horn, church pastor, said The Kempters is a vintage gospel band from Slapout that has made quite a name for itself throughout Alabama.

“The Kempters is a popular family singing group made up of the father, Chaz Kempters and five of his children,” Horn said. “The children range in age from14 to 24 and all of them are outstanding musicians and singers.”

Horn said The Kempters sing a variety of gospel music including the old-time gospel songs that most people sing by heart.

“The Kempters sing the songs that we all know and love,” he said. “Anybody that enjoys gospel music and old-time church music will enjoy The Kempters.”

Chaz Kempter is the lead vocalist but each of the young Kempters can really sing, too, Horn said. “They all play instruments and each one will be featured on their instrument, the piano or keyboard, guitar, mandolin, fiddle and drums. They are amazingly talented.”

Ebenezer Baptist Church recently hosted The Chuck Wagon Gang and the church was packed with people of all ages.

“The Chuck Wagon Gang has been around for a long time and was very familiar to the middle aged and older members of our congregation,” Horn said. “We have a large number of young couples and young people in our church. They really enjoyed The Chuck Wagon Gang and the members of the ‘Gang’ commented on the large number of young people in attendance. They said they are used to playing to older audiences and really appreciated having young people there to hear them.”

Horn said, because Ebenezer has a large number of young people, he wanted to bring in a group made up of mainly young people.

“The Kempters will appeal to our older members just as The Chuck Wagon Gang appealed to the younger people,” he said. “We’ll have a night of great gospel music. We invite everybody to join us Saturday night to hear an outstanding vintage gospel band.

Horn said from Troy, the simplest way to Ebenezer Baptist Church is to go to Luverne and take Highway 331 North and turn at the Citgo Station onto County Road 68 and travel about 2 miles. The church is on the right.
