Troy’s American Legion Post 70 baseball team started the East Cobb Showcase 2-0 after defeating Opelika 16-1 on Tuesday and the Young Guns 2-0 on Wednesday.

The two wins improve Post to 13-2 on the season.

Jackson Byrd got the start for Post 70 on Wednesday and pitched the first two innings before Joey Wozniak and Reece Burbage finished off the final five.

“I thought they did really well,” said head coach Rush Hixon. “All three of them commanded the strike zone really well. The pitching performance was really good, and we played good defense behind them.”

Post 70 finished with five hits on Wednesday led by Bryson Gandy who finished with two.

Both Post 70’s runs came in the third when Carson Tucker scored on a Hunter Reeves double and Reeves scored on a single by Hunter Jones.

Game one of the showcase was different story. Post 70 scored in all four innings and walked away with a comfortable 15-run win.

“I think last night was the most complete game we have played all summer,” Hixon said. “We had all three phases working.”

Graham Wilkes got the start for Post 70 and went the game’s first three innings, surrendering one unearned run. He allowed two hits and struck out two batters without allowing a walk.

Parker Warren pitched the final inning of the shortened game. He allowed two walks and struck out two batters.

“I thought Graham did really good,” Hixon said. “He was in the zone and that is what Graham does. He fills it up and throws strikes. They beat it into the ground and we made really good plays on the ball. We thought Parker threw well also. He threw one inning but he came in and we thought it was a good change of speed after Graham and it kept them off balance.”

Post 70 finished with 15 hits, led by Hunter Reeves, who went 3-3 with two RBIs. Gage Herring, Hunter Jones, Bryson Gandy and Jackson Tate all finished with two hits.

“I was really pleased with how we swung the bats,” Hixon said. “We didn’t get cheated at the plate at all. We got our cuts in and we hit balls hard.

Reeves got both of his RBIs in the opening inning when he belted a two-run homerun to left field to give Post 70 the early 2-0 lead.

Post 70 added to their lead in the second inning when Jones came around to score on sacrifice fly from Casey Henderson to make it 3-0. Gandy tripled later in the inning scoring Herring and Joey Wozniak came around to score on an error bringing the score to 5-0.

After East Cobb scored their only run of the game in the bottom of the second, Post 70 added five more to put the game out of reach at 10-1.

Post 70 had two two-run doubles by some familiar faces in Jackson Murphy and Hunter Jones. Herring drove in the final run of the inning on a double scoring Jones.

To erase any hope of a comeback for East Cobb, Post 70 had their biggest inning of the game in the fourth when they tacked on six more runs to bring the score to 16-1.

John Miller led off the inning with a homerun to left field. Post 70 also had doubles by Logan Thompson and Henderson.

Post 70 will be back in action this today when they play at 11:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. at Lee Scott Academy and Auburn University.
