The Troy Ponytails fell 17-2 to host Geneva on Friday to finish second in the District Tournament.

“We didn’t play very well,” said Ponytails head coach Terry Garrett. “We had four or five errors and we didn’t pitch very well.”

With the second place finish, Troy advances to the state tournament in Montgomery beginning on July 7.

“I am very proud of these girls,” Garrett said. “They did better than my expectations; they just came out flat in the two games against Geneva. I am proud of our pitching, and I am looking forward to what these young pitchers will do when we hit state. We are going to work hard next week on our hitting.”

Molly Garrett started for Troy. She recorded the first out of the game before being replaced. She came back in to pitch the fourth inning.

Geneva hit a homerun off Troy and picked up a few hits, but in the end it was the errors that put an end to Troy’s district title hopes.

“Hit and errors,” Garrett said. “They hit a homerun and three or four hits, but three or four hits don’t score 17 runs.”

Troy scored both their runs in the fourth inning on base hits by Emily Bryan and Dakota Berry.

Friday night’s game was Troy’s first game since Monday, but Garrett doesn’t believe the layoff was to blame for his team’s play.

“I think it was just one of those days,” Garrett said. “The pitcher on the mound didn’t throw strikes to begin with got us down quick. With these young girls when they get down it’s hard to get out of the hole.”
