The Troy City Council could set the date today for a special election to hold referendum that would decide whether the city would have Sunday alcohol sales.

City Clerk Alton Starling said Gov. Kay Ivey signed legislation last week to authorize the council to hold a referendum and a resolution to set the date is on the council’s agenda for tonight’s meeting.

“The time that I’m proposing is October 10 because the primaries for the election that Kay Ivey just called will be over,” Starling said.

“This will be right in between all those elections so those won’t interfere with ours and ours won’t interfere with those.”

Starling said another possible date for the election is October 3.

Although the resolution has October 10 as the date for the election, the council could still vote to hold it on another date today. Starling said he would simply modify the resolution with the date the council chooses.

The referendum will be worded: ““Do you favor the adoption of ACT No. 2017-309, of the Regular Session of the Alabama Legislature authorizing the sale of alcoholic beverages after 12:00 p.m. on Sundays in the City of Troy? Yes ( ) No ( ).”
