Former Charles Henderson standout Nick Lewis along with the rest of the Wallace-Dothan Community College baseball team will represent the state of Alabama Govs in the College World Series in Grand Junction, Colorado this weekend.

“We have had a great year, better than I thought it would be,” Lewis said.

After playing shortstop for the Trojans, Lewis made the transition to the right side of the infield where he played second and even first base.

After competing at such a high level in high school, Lewis had to adjust to a new style of baseball on the collegiate level.

“I learned a lot this year,” Lewis said. “I learned that you are going to face better pitching, you have to make short and smooth swings and I learned that people are going to be on your level so you have come out and work.

During his first year with the Govs, Lewis is hitting .347 with one home run, 31 RBI, 15 stolen bases and 41 runs scored.

“I think I have gotten better as the year has gone on,” Lewis said.

Lewis has had the opportunity to get to know his new teammates. It’s a group that he describes as one that gets along really well.

“All those guys are different and one of a kind,” Lewis said. “They all have that one job they need to do for us to win and they all came through in every game.”

The Govs defeated Faulkner State in walk-off fashion in the ACCC champions to earn their spot in Grand Junction this weekend. Lewis gave the Govs the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning when he smacked a double and came around to score on a single.

The Govs fell to the Sun Chiefs a day earlier, but Lewis and Wallace were able to get their revenge in the championship game.

“That was a tough run,” Lewis said. “We had to come in every game and score runs for our pitchers. Our pitchers held them and were able to pull it out.”

Lewis will be part of the Govs team that will now represent the state of Alabama at the JCAA World Series. The trip will take Lewis to Colorado and will be the furthest he has ever been away from home.

“It’s amazing to know that you are going to be one of those guys,” Lewis said. “It’s going to be a great experience and I am ready for it.”

The Govs will begin their state journey on Saturday morning at 9 a.m.

“Up there we are going to have to play until the end,” Lewis said. “They say the wind is unbelievable up there. You have to play to the end because you never know when a ball will fly out of the park. I am going to go up there and be me; make some plays and produce.”
