Humane Society gets $20,000 for spay and neuter program

The Humane Society of Pike County’s Spay-Neuter Program is underway and $20,000 has been allocated for the spring/summer.

“If all the funds are expended, that’s enough for 400 animals – dogs and cats—to be sterilized,” said Donna Brockmann, HSPC president. “That means that generations of unwanted, unloved animals will not exist. And, animals that are sterilized tend to live longer and healthier lives. So, the HSPC encourages pet owners to have their animals spayed or neutered.”

Any citizen of Pike County and students at Troy University are eligible to participate.

The Humane Society of Pike County will pay $50 toward each procedure that is done through its spay and neuter program.

“To participate, pet owners need only contact the veterinarian clinic of their choice and say they want to participate in the HSPC’s spay and neuter program,” Brockmann said. Jones Animal Clinic, Pike Animal Hospital, Southern Animal Hospital and Pet Resort, Trojan Animal Clinic and Troy Animal Clinic are participating.

Brockmann said there are not enough people on the planet to love all the animals that are currently alive.

“Sadly, there countless numbers of dogs and cats that are neglected, abandoned and abused,” she said. “To see an animal that has been mistreated is heartbreaking. By having dogs and cats spayed and neutered, we can stop so much of this hurting.”

The HSPC’s spring/summer spay and neuter program is funded through the humane society’s 2017 Pet Photo Contest and donations and memorials.

“The Humane Society of Pike County greatly appreciates the support of the Pike County community,” Brockmann said. “Those who entered their pets in the Pet Photo Contest, those who cast votes and those who have made donations have all played a role in the HSPC’s ability to offer this spay and neuter program.

“The best way to control the unwanted animal population is by spaying and neutering.  So please, participate and share the news of this opportunity with others.”
