The City of Troy is one step closer to holding a referendum on Sunday alcohol sales in the city limits.

A local bill to authorize the city council to hold the referendum is now through its required four weeks of advertising in the local paper and has been entered in the state Legislature.

Council President Marcus Paramore said the bill was entered into House Committee on Thursday and will proceed from there.

“There’s no hard timeline,” Paramore said. “It can move through some steps quickly but could sit there until the House take sup local bills and then it has to go through the same process in the Senate. Then the governor has to sign it. So it’s just a waiting game now.”

The bill would authorize the council to hold a referendum to allow the on-premise and off-premise sale of alcohol from noon to midnight on Sundays inside Troy’s corporate limits. If the referendum passed, the City could then further limit Sunday sales through local ordinance.

The vote would not affect the rest of Pike County, where Sunday sales are not allowed.
