Brundidge Police Chief Moses Davenport said his department is treating the case of a decomposing body found in a private pond off Pike County Road 3310 on Saturday as a homicide, unless notified otherwise by the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences.

Davenport said the body was a male and had been in the pond for seven to 10 days.

“Until we know otherwise – sometime (today) – we are treating the incident as a homicide,” Davenport said. “No fishing gear was found around the pond and only a reel was found in the truck that was located by a state helicopter about 250 yards away on Sunday afternoon.

“The truck was in a deeply wooded area and, once the truck was found, we could drive into where it was. The truck was on the opposite side of the pond where the body was found.”

Davenport said finding the truck helped dispel the possibility that the body had been dumped into the pond located off the road also known as Connell Road.

“The truck was registered to the McCray family in Brundidge,” Davenport said. “The truck belonged to a man that we were told by his wife was missing. We don’t know if the missing person is the same man whose body we found. When we hear back from forensics, we’ll know if the two are the same.”

Davenport said the body was found by a man who was fishing the pond with his son.

“The man saw the decomposing body near the bank but told his son it was an alligator, the police chief said. “He took his son back to the house and called 911.”

The Brundidge Police Department responded along with the Pike County coroner, Troy Fire and Rescue and the Pike County Sheriff’s Department.

Davenport said the report from the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences is expected sometime today.
