The Troy Police Department arrested a Troy man Tuesday and charged him with six burglaries, all of which occurred in about a seven-hour timeframe Tuesday morning.

Jeremy Jermaine Swanson, 25, was charged with two counts of first-degree burglary and four counts of third-degree burglary in connection with a string of burglaries Tuesday morning around the downtown area.

Swanson was armed with a handgun according to Troy Police Chief Randall Barr.

Barr said the four third-degree charges were for business burglaries and the two first-degree burglary charges were for home burglaries.

Barr said the incidents started minutes before Midnight Monday with a burglary of a business in the 800 block of North 3 Notch Street.

“We had an alarm activation at a business there and we arrived to find a broken window,” Barr said. “We contacted the store owner and looked at the video and saw that we had a black male in the store wearing a grey hoodie and blue jeans. I don’t know if we had him identified at that time, but we knew who we were looking for.”

A little later that morning, with an officer still in the area, another business was broken into on Love Street. The officer heard the audible alarm and police responded to the call. While en route, Barr said the officer spotted Swanson but police could not locate him.

The business was Home Gallery, confirmed by owner Sherry Helms. Helms said surveillance video showed Swanson breaking one of the stores windows and heading to the cash register area.

Around 6 a.m. that morning, Barr said, police responded to another burglary, this time at a residence in Park Street. While responding to that call, police got another burglary call at another Park Street residence and spotted Swanson while heading to that call.

Police chased Swanson into the woods where they finally caught up to him and arrested him. Police recovered a backpack that Swanson had on him when they found him that Barr said had been taken from one of the residences. Inside police found marijuana and another controlled substance.

Barr said both residences were occupied when Swanson broke in.

Later that morning, police were notified of two other business burglaries in the 100 block North Market Street, which Swanson was also charged with.

Police added on charges of attempting to elude, first-degree possession of marijuana  and possession of a controlled substance.

In all, Swanson’s bond totals $118,000 and Barr said that bond could be revoked. Barr said Swanson was out on bond when the burglaries were committed.

“What really makes me mad is he was out on bond for doing the same thing,” Helms said.

Barr credited his officers for making a quick arrest in connection with the burglaries.

“Our officers did a great job. They were only one step behind him everywhere he went,” Barr said. “They eventually got him and brought him into custody and can bring some closure to some of these cases. It was just a great team effort to bring him into custody.”
