The Trojans dropped their first two games of the Trojan Classic on Friday evening when they fell to Ocean Springs 8-2 and Thorsby

Charles Henderson kicked off play in the 2017 Trojan Classic Tournament on Friday afternoon with losses to Ocean Springs and Thorsby.

In game one the Trojans allowed the Greyhounds to pull away late in an 8-2 loss.

“We take every game with the approach that we have to get better,” said Trojans head coach Rob Snyder. “We just didn’t do a good job hitting the ball. We faced a pitcher that we should be able to hit.”

Back-to-back hits to right center gave the Greyhounds a 1-0 lead in the first. A pair of extra base hits, including a two-out triple, bought the lead to 2-0.

Ocean Springs scored another run in the third before starting pitcher Emma Kirkpatrick retired the side in the fourth.

The Trojans offense came alive in the bottom of the inning, scoring two runs on two hits.

Sidney Armstrong reached on an error and came around to score on single by Lindsey Fox. Molly Kate Sanders followed with a double to score Fox. Sanders was thrown out at third as the potential tying run and the Greyhounds got out of the inning.

The Greyhounds belted a three-run home run and scored five runs in the fifth to put the game out of reach of the Trojans.

Kirkpatrick pitched all five inning. She allowed eight runs, seven of which were earned on nine hits.

“I thought she did a great job and she gave us a chance to win,” Snyder said. “She had one bad mistake towards the end of the game. Make a play here and there and she may not have had that opportunity. We have to finish.”

The Trojans finished with five hits by Tucker Earles, Fox, Sanders, Williams and Kaitlyn Richardson.

In game two the offense continued struggle, and the Trojans lost 3-0 to Thorsby.

Earles, Williams and Abbie Barron picked up the Trojans only three hits.

The Trojans got a strong pitching performance by Sanders, who pitched all six innings of the timed contest. She allowed three runs, noe of which were earned on three hits. The Trojans defense totaled four errors in game two.

The Trojans will continue play in the Classic today against a team still to be determined.
