The Goshen Eagles took advantage of a strong pitching performance by Landon Wilkes in their 7-5 win over the Houston County Lions on Friday night the first game of a double-header.

Wilkes pitched all but one inning and allowed five runs on seven hits while striking out 13 batters. In the process, she struck out the side in both the third and sixth innings.

The Eagles finished with five hits, by five different players: Evan Rose, Hunter Williams, Dalton Bunce, Blake Chilos and Addison Hand.

Both teams went quietly in the first two innings. Wilkes struck out the first two batters in the first and the last two in the second.

The Eagles were able to break through in the second inning whey scored the game’s first two runs.

Both Williams and Bunce reached base to begin the inning and both came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Taten Phillips and a triple by Hand.

After striking out the side in the third, Wilkes ran into a bit of trouble in the fourth. The Lions scored four runs on three hits, an error and a walk to claim a 4-2 lead.

The Eagles quickly tied up the game and took the lead in the fourth when Cory Peterson scored on an error by the first baseman and when Mitchell Rushing scored on a balk from the pitcher to give the Eagles a 5-4 lead.

After the Lions evened the score in the fifth, the Eagles went ahead for the final time in the sixth when Rushing grounded out to score Chilos and Rose singled in Phillips to give the Eagles a 7-5 lead.

The Eagles also played the Lions in the second game of the double-header late Friday evening.

The Eagles will be back in action on Monday when they travel to take on Greenville.
