4-H steer and heifer show to celebrate 75 years

The Pike County 4-H Steer and Heifer Show will celebrate 75 years on March 11 at Cattleman Park.

Ten 4-H’ers will show 17 animals at this milestone show, said Heath Wesley, Pike County Extension coordinator.

“That the Pike County 4-H Steer and Heifer Show is still going strong after 75 years speaks volumes about the kids, the parents, the Extension professionals and agents that have worked for and supported this show,” Wesley said. “Seventy-five years. That’s amazing.”

Wesley said those who have shown steers and heifers over those many years invested huge amounts of times, energy and dollars into their efforts.

“When you think of everything that is involved, you understand the commitment these young people and their parents – their families make,” Wesley said. “As soon as this year’s show is over, these 4-H’ers will start looking for animals for next year’s show. In fact, there’s a show here in Troy in June.  There has to be a real commitment and it’s always been that way.”

The 75th Anniversary of the Pike County Steer and Heifer Show will recognize those who have participated in the local show since day one, Wesley said.

“We are inviting and encouraging all past participants, whether it was in 1942 or 2016, to come, be recognized and celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Pike County 4-H Steer and Heifer Show with us,” Wesley said.

In an effort to look back 75 years, the Extension office is asking anyone with photographs, especially from the early years, to allow them to be included in a slide presentation that will be shown during the celebration meal prior to the 2017 Pike County 4-H Steer and Heifer Show.

“We have a lot of recent pictures but not many of the early shows and we would greatly appreciate people sharing them with us,” Wesley said. “If you’ll bring the photos by the office, we’ll scan them and give them right back. Or, the photos can be emailed to us. Call the office at 566-0985 and we’ll decided how best to get the photos to us.”

The 75th Pike County 4-H Steer and Heifer Show will begin with the pre-show meal at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 11. The steer and heifer show will begin immediately following. Former show participates will be recognized during the event.

“The 2017 show will celebrate those who have been a part of the 75 years and there are lot of them – from the kids to their parents to those involved in the steer and heifer program and 4-H in general,” Wesley said. “Everybody is invited. Circle March 11 in red on your calendar and make plans to be a part of this milestone steer and heifer show.”
