The Pike Patriots boys and girl’s basketball teams were swept by the Lakeside Chiefs in area play on Friday evening in Eufaula.

The Chiefs benefited from clutch shooting from behind the arc controlled the game all evening long.

“They have a very good team,” said head coach Allen Ponder. “We went in with a game plan and we thought we executed at times, but there were other times when we didn’t. I have to give them all the credit in the world.

“They shot the ball as well as I have seen a high school team ever shoot. They were shooting 10 to 20 feet from behind the line. I have never seen anything like it.”

The Chiefs played an aggressive style of basketball and it showed on the boards.

“They did a great job on the boards,” Ponder said. “They kept us off the boards on offense. They were the aggressor. They deserved to win the game and we need to get back to the drawing board and get ready for next week.”

Hunter Jones led the Patriots with 12 points on the night.

The Patriots will step out of region play on Monday when they host Crenshaw on Monday before hosting Lakeside on Tuesday.

“We just have to respond,” Ponder said. “We went out tonight and didn’t play the game that we wanted to play. Basketball is one of those sports where you have a quick turn around. We will see how we respond.”

The Lady Patriots were within eight points after the first quarter at 16-8 before entering halftime at 29-16.

In the third quarter the Patriots were able to make one charge and got to within two points at 29-27 with 4:02 remaining until fourth. The Chiefs lead increased to seven heading into the fourth quarter and the Patriots couldn’t catch up.

Lauren Johnson led the way for the Patriots with 29 points, while Susie Stell scored three and Mya Terry scored two.

Like the boys, the girls will host Crenshaw on Monday before playing Lakeside on Tuesday. Both games are scheduled to start at approximately 6 p.m.
