The Goshen Eagles swept two pivotal area games against Central-Hayneville on Friday.

The wins the area records for both Goshen teams to 3-0.

The boys ended the night with a 72-60 win.

“After the Central game, we have talked to them all week about answering the call,” said Eagles head coach Ethan Carroll. “This was big because of confidence. When you move areas like we did there are a lot of questions. I thought our kids had a lot of energy.”

The Eagles were led offensively by Zack Alford who scored 27 points and Michael Hollis who scored 19.

“Being around these guys you get used to it,” Carroll said. “I have to go back and watch sometimes to see how great of job they do.”

The turning point of the basketball game occurred in the second quarter when Central’s 6-foot 4-inch center got into foul trouble forcing him to sit on the bench until the second half.

“The biggest thing that changed their philosophy was when their guy got four fouls in the first half,” Carroll said. “That changed what they were going to do.”

The Eagles took a 35-30 lead into halftime and were able to push it to double figures going into the fourth quarter.

Central as close as 10 points down in the fourth quarter, but the combination of Hollis and Alford was too much to overcome.

The Lady Eagles began the night with a thrilling 59-57 come from behind win.

The Eagles trailed by as many as 10 points late in the third quarter, but they clawed back.

“I am just happy for these kids,” said Eagles head coach Fred Lowery. “The flu bug bit me this week. For them to come out and put forth that type of effort says a lot about them.”

Trailing by nine points early in the third quarter, the Eagles embarked on a 13-0 run to give them a three-point lead at 46-43.

“I told them this was our house and they believed that we could win it,” Lowery said. “I told them we had to control the boards and we did that.”

The teams traded baskets until the game’s final minute. With the game tied at 57 and Central holding for the final shot, they were called for three-seconds in the late turning possession over to the Eagles. Shamiya Griffin took advantage and scored with 12 seconds remaining to give the Eagles the win.

Bree Griffin led the Eagles with 29 points, while Shamiya Griffin had 16.

The Eagles will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to play Luverne beginning at 6 p.m.
