The Pike County Road Department announced on Wednesday that a portion of County Road 1101, also know as Shellhorn Road, will close on Tuesday for repairs.

Pike County Engineer Russell Oliver said that the road is expected to be closed for three to four weeks as the road department works to replace a drainage pipe under the road that was damaged in the spring of 2014 by heavy rains.

“We were fortunate enough to get the project funded through the Federal Highway Administration emergency relief program,” Oliver said.

Oliver explained that the damage led to a sinkhole on the road, which the county had to temporarily fix while waiting on a permanent solution. Oliver said that this project will prevent any further erosion of the road bed by completely replacing the pipe and inlet with new materials.

Oliver said that there will be a detour using county roads 1777 and 1148 and U.S. 231. He said there are also other ways around the closure depending on where residents are going and coming from.

The road will close at approximately 6 a.m. on Tuesday, January 24.
