Pike County’s Distinguished Young Woman Lindsey Fox is participating in the 2017 Distinguished Young Woman of Alabama program at Frazier United Methodist Church in Montgomery this week. 

She is saying with a host family in Montgomery and will perform in the state program on Friday and Saturday.

Lindsey, a senior at Charles Henderson High School, was the overall 2017 DYW of Pike County winner and also received awards in the interview and self-expression categories and was voted “Spirit of Jr. Miss” by fellow participants.

Candy Howard-Shaughnessy, Pike County DYW program board member, said the board hosted a “send off” reception for Lindsey at Sips on the Square and the community came out in strong support of the Pike County DYW.

“The board is very proud of Lindsey and wishes her the best at state,” Shaughnessy said. “We know that she will have a lot of fun and make many new friends and memories for a lifetime.”

Shaughnessy said Lindsey is honored to represent Pike County at the statewide program and excited to have the opportunities that come with participation.

“Lindsey has a very unique talent, archery,” Shaughnessy said. “She is hopeful that she will be one of the young women chosen to visit the schools. She wants girls to know that archery is sport they can participate in and enjoy as a hobby.”

Anyone who kiddingly asks Lindsey if she plans to, like William Tell, shoot an apple off a man’s head will probably be surprised at her answer.

“No, Lindsey’s not going to shoot an apple off a man’s head but she is going to shoot an apple out of a pig’s mouth,” Shaughnessy said, laughing. “Her dad made a stuffed pig and she will shoot an apple out of its mouth.”

Lindsey will also shoot arrows into confetti filled balloons, showing the stage with color.

“Her talent will be different and exciting,” Shaughnessy said. “The Pike County DYW board members will be in the audience supporting her.”

The DYW will spend the week practicing for the program and participating in events and activities around the city. All of their attention will be focused on the program and they will have no outside contacts with the exception of “notes from home.”

The preliminary programs are at 7:30 p.m. Friday and 1 p.m. on Saturday.
