It was pretty much a a sure bet that Lindsey Fox was going to be a ball player, being that there were three older brothers under their roof on Norfolk Avenue.

If there was a game that involved a ball, the four Fox children were right in the middle of it.

There was also positive competitiveness and hard work, emphasis on academics, church and character, and Thursday morning that formula resulted in Lindsey, a senior at Charles Henderson High School, signing a scholarship to play softball next year at LBW of Andalusia.

“My brothers and I were always at the ballfields or the gym,” said Lindsey. “We were practicing and working out and were pretty much always there. They never gave me any slack. If they were doing it, I had to do it. I was just expected to do it if they were and that helped me in a lot of ways.”

Fox got her opportunity with LBW by attending a tryout for head coach Tiffany Taylor, who immediately was impressed with the infielder.

“I knew from the day that Lindsey tried out that we had to have her,” said Coach Taylor. “She’s definitely a go-getter and I could tell she had great character. She tried out for us at shortstop, and I asked her if she could take some grounders at third and she was quick to respond that yes she could.

“Although she has not taken very many reps over there she did a great job. She looked like she had been over there her whole life. I loved her attitude. She is a very coachable kid and I really like that about her.”

Lindsey plays shortstop for the Lady Trojans, who have just begun conditioning this week in preparation for the season opener Feb. 21 for CHHS head softball coach Robin Snyder.

“We are very excited for Lindsey that she is able to extend her education and her softball career,” said Coach Snyder. “She will be our only senior this year. She is just a really good team player, and is very thoughtful and does not try to do just what she wants. She tries to do what she thinks is best for the team and those are the qualities that you are looking for in a good leader.”

Lindsey was thankful for the opportunity to try out for Coach Taylor at LBW, and is excited about the potential of the Lady Trojans in her final season at CHHS.

“As soon as I met Coach Taylor, I was excited,” said Lindsey. “She seems so awesome, and I can’t wait to play for her. The team atmosphere that she provided last season was great. I’m just really excited about the support our school has, and it takes away all the pressure and I can just have fun this year. We are definitely going to be good at every position this season. We’ve been playing together for years, so we know how each other plays and at every position there is a lot of confidence.”

Gary and Sheree Fox have been loyal supporters of community and school athletics, and it was about family more than it was trophies.

The three boys got an early start in baseball, with Michael graduating from CHHS in 2012, playing two years at Jefferson Davis in Brewton and two years at Alabama-Huntsville. Nathan was also an outstanding baseball player, graduating in 2013. He and his wife Jo Jo live in North Carolina and Nathan is serving his country in the U.S. Marines. Reilly is in his second year of a baseball scholarship at Jefferson Davis, following his 2015 graduation.

“Athletics gave us something that we could connect with our children as parents,” said Gary Fox. “There was lots of ball going on all the time. We’ve never really had a family vacation, because we spent all of our time at this tournament or that tournament, and those were our vacations. We did not go to Disney World. We might take a weekend trip to the beach, but as far as weekday time off, it was a tournament here or there. The boys played all sports and Lindsey played basketball up until the ninth grade, volleyball and softball. We felt it was important to play all sports.”
