The Charles Henderson Lady Trojans used a lot of pressure on defense to defeat Greenville 67-39 in the area opener on Tuesday.

“They played team basketball,” said Trojans head coach Dyneshia Jones. “They worked together. We executed our press defense tonight and we were able to score on a lot of layups.

The Trojans were led in scoring by Tatyana Siler with 23 points while Maori Davenport and Niaira Jones both contributed.

The three Trojan playmakers accounted for 63 of the teams 67 points in the win against the Tigers.

“That’s huge,” Jones said. “You can’t just guard one person and play against just one of our players. On any given day we we can have anybody score a lot of points.

The Trojans led throughout the night and led by as many as 24 points over the Tigers. The Tigers were able to battle back to within 12 points after converting from the three-point line.

“That is the reason why we worked so hard during the summer,” Jones said. “We have been working hard for area play. It’s a great accomplishment. We are 1-0 right now.”

The Trojans hope to make it 2-0 in area play when they take on Brew Tech at home on Thursday in a battle of two heavyweights at 6 p.m.

“We have to execute the things that we have been working on,” Jones said. “Running our plays right and whatever they bring to us we just need to execute. Whatever they bring to us we just need to execute well.”
