When Jack Frost starts nipping at your nose, then it’s time to go inside and snuggle up with a good book.

That’s the recommendation of the staff of the Tupper Lightfoot Memorial Library in Brundidge. And, to further encourage reading among adults this winter season, the library is sponsoring a Winter Reading Contest for Adults.

The contest begins on January 1 and concludes on March 15.

“The contest is a way to promote reading among our adult patrons,” said Theresa Trawick, library director. “We have a large number of adults who are regular readers and we hope to generate even more interest among adults through this contest.”

The rules are simple. Each participate, 18 years and older, will read five books, four fictions and one non-fiction.

“All five of the books read for the contest must be checked out at the Tupper Lightfoot Memorial Library or down-loaded on Ebooks from our library,” Trawick said. “We have forms for each participate to complete. When each book is read, the name of the reader will be entered in a drawing for prizes, including the grand prize of $100.”

The prizes are great but the process is even greater, Trawick said.

“You can sign up for the contest at any time,” Trawick said. “Just give yourself enough time to read five books.”

January 2017 will be a busy time for the Brundidge public library. Two special programs are planned, Benjamin Franklin Day Commentary and Dr. Martin Luther King’s Birthday Celebration Day, Trawick said.

Third Tuesday’s Brown Bag program on January 17, which is Franklin’s birthday, will feature a commentary on Franklin which will be informative and especially interesting and entertaining.

On Saturday, January 21, people of all ages are invited to Dr. Martin Luther King’s Birthday Celebration at 10 a.m. at the Robert E. Barr Nutrition Center.

“The celebration will feature activities for pre-school children though adults,” Trawick said.

“We’ll have something fun for everyone, including reading, crafts and games.”

Regular library programs will resume in January with the exception of Teen-Time Tuesday, which has been cancelled for January.

The pre-school and home school program will resume on January 10 and 12, respectively.

Tutoring will resume from 3:30-4:45 p.m. on Wednesdays for grades one through three and on Thursdays for grades four through six.

The pre-school program for ages two to pre-K will be Five Little Monkeys at 10 a.m. on Saturday, January 7.

“We invite all preschoolers to come enjoy fun, games and snacks,” Trawick said.

While at the Tupper Lightfoot Memorial Library, ask about the library’s preservation program. Any items of historical significance should be preserved for future generations. The items may be copied and returned or preserved on-site.
