The Charles Henderson Lady Trojans overcame a sluggish start to defeat Oxford 48-22 Tuesday in the first round of the Hoover Big Orange Tournament.

The win pushes the Trojans’ record to 10-0 on the season and they advance to take on Oak Mountain on Wednesday morning beginning at 9:30 a.m.

“The second half was good, but we didn’t play a good first half,” said Trojans head coach Dyneshia Jones. “We were able to have a good second half.”

The Trojans struggled to shoot the ball in the first half, but they were able to carry a 15-7 lead into the locker room at halftime.

“We just had a lot of missed shots,” Jones said. “Every time we were able to get the ball in the post they would double team us. We struggled the ball inside and then missed our outside shots.”

The Trojans were able to pull away in the third quarter by cutting down on their mistakes and forcing the ball inside to Maori Davenport.

“We rotated and improved our offense and got the ball inside and we started to work the boards more,” Jones said.

After not scoring any points in the first half, Davenport added 14 in the second and the Trojans were able to increase their lead. Davenport finished with nine rebounds, three assists, three steals and seven blocked shots. Tatyana Siler led the Trojans in scoring with 17 points and had eight rebounds and one blocked shot.

Niaira Jones also scored in double figures with 14 while having six assists and six steals.

The Trojans hope to fix their mistakes and continue to play their brand of basketball when they take on the Class 7A representative Eagles.

“It will be tough to get up and play at 9:30, but the other team has to play also,” Jones said. “We need to play good fundamental basketball. I want to see us play a better first half.”
