On Thursday, December 22, 400 turkeys and meals will be prepared and delivered to families in need in the Pike County area.

The Turkeys from Heaven program has been delivering meals and a prayer for three years. The first year, nearly local 200 families benefitted from the volunteer program. Last year, 300 turkey meals were delivered and this year 400 families will have Turkeys from Heaven and from the hearts of the volunteers who make it possible.

Kelly Sanders, who organized the local Turkeys from Heaven program that is modeled after the program in Dothan, said Turkeys from Heaven is a wonderful way to spread Christmas cheer.

“Volunteers are needed and welcomed,” Sanders said. “Those who volunteer always say they are blessed by the experience.”

There are three ways to volunteer for Turkeys from Heaven. First, purchase a turkey for $15 at either Piggly Wiggly location in Troy.

“The turkeys will be left at the Piggly Wiggly where they will be thawed and delivered to The Emporium to be cooked,” Sanders said. “Another way people can help is to bring a dessert to The Emporium in downtown Troy between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Wednesday, December 21 or on Thursday, December 22.”

The desserts should be items that do not have to be refrigerated, such as cookies, cakes and pies.

Volunteers will also be needed to help prepare and deliver the meals on Thursday, December 22.

“Volunteers may come as early at 8 a.m. but we will need volunteers throughout the day,” Sanders said. “So, we encourage volunteers to just come when they can.”

The Turkeys from Heaven program is dependent on volunteers and the people of Pike County have been very supportive of the program.

“I’m sure that we all receive much more than we give,” Sanders said. “The real blessing is in giving and I believe anyone who has participated in Turkeys from Heaven has been richly blessed.”
