Six teams will battle for state titles as the AISA Football Tripleheader Championships come to Veterans Memorial Stadium today.

The AISA Class A championship will kick off with 11-1 Abbeville Christian taking on 10-2 Chambers Academy at noon. The Class AA game will feature 12-0 Edgewood Academy versus 10-1 Marengo Academy at 3:30 p.m. in a rematch of last year’s championship game. The Class AAA championship game will close out the when 13-0 Monroe Academy clashes with 12-0 Bessemer Academy at 7 p.m.

The championships have been played in Troy since 2000.

“We always look forward to this event,” said AISA Athletic Director Roddie Beck. “Troy’s hospitality is wonderful. They are a first class program down here and they are doing everything they can to make sure this even runs smooth.”

This will be the second time Abbeville and Chambers have faced each other this season. Abbeville won the first matchup 47-6 in September.

Abbeville defeated Patrician Academy and Jackson Academy to reach the championship while Chambers won a couple of nail-biters against Sparta and South Choctaw Academy.

The middle game of the triple-header features two teams who steam-rolled their way through the regular season. Edgewood defeated Wilcox Academy 48-6 in the opening round and blew out Clarke Prep 49-12. Marengo beat Macon-East 60-14 and followed that up with a 48-7 win over Pickens.

Both Bessemer and Monroe Academy combined to give up only 14 points so far this post season, as Bessemer shut out Fort Dale Academy 47-0 before beating Autauga Academy 45-7. Monroe Academy beat Glenwood 49-0 and followed that up with a 34-7 win over Lee-Scott Academy in the semi-finals.

“We are looking for three great games starting at noon,” Beck said. “It should be a great day for us.”

The chance to play in the championship game alone will give these kids memories that will last a lifetime, but when you throw in the opportunity to play at a college stadium, it’s just icing on the cake.

“We do have some kids that go on to play at the next level, but for the majority of them this is a lifelong experience,” Beck said. “It’s an experience that these kids will never forget. It’s a once in a lifetime deal.”
