The story of Jesus Christ’s last steps came alive this week during a presentation of the Stations of the Cross.

The live reenactment was organized by Troy University Students from the Mother Teresa Catholic Newman Ministry in celebration of Holy Week and was presented Tuesday at St. Martin Catholic Church.

The performance includes a series of prayers and live reenactment, tracing the last steps of Christ to His moment of crucifixion.

“Seeing Stations of the Cross in person instead of reading it makes the story come alive,” said Kelsey Burgans, community director of housing and residence life for the Newman Center. “We can physically see what Jesus went through.

“This has been a lot of work for the students, but we do it because we think its important for students and the public to know the love of Christ.”

The Rev. Den Irwin of St. Martin Catholic Church said the story and the presentation of Stations of the Cross has important educational value. “It’s important that (this event) brings everything that Jesus went through to life. This helps us understand and experience the story in person rather than from a distance.”

Today begins the celebration of Easter with Maundy or Holy Thursday, which commemorates the Last Supper at which Jesus Christ dined with his apostles. Churches throughout Pike County have services. Services continue on Good Friday; Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday, with some area churches holding sunrise services.
